Bannack was the first territorial capital of Montana, back when gold, commerce and political power were all up for grabs. Henry Plummer, the so-called "outlaw sheriff" was lynched here with his two deputies on a freezing January night in 1864 by a band of feral Republicans from the Masonic Hall (center) in a purge of political rivals and undesireables. Although later research suggests Plummer was innocent, it was the vigilantes and their descendents who founded the Montana Historical Society which still promulgates the more exculpatory tale,
